Lela Day Robe

Wore this to my cousin's naming ceremony in Yaoundé last month and I was moving all day—sitting, dancing, eating—without feeling trapped. The fabric is still substantial enough to hold the cut properly, but it's not heavy like some of the ceremonial robes. My mother borrowed it after and said the same thing.

Lela day in Bamenda heat used to mean choosing between looking proper or staying cool. This robe lets me do both. Wore it to my mother's anniversary and then again to my niece's graduation—two very different occasions, same piece, felt right both times.

The drape is exactly what I wanted for my friend's wedding in Buea, and the heritage cut is unmistakable. I ordered my usual size and it fit close—which is lovely for the silhouette—but I had to be careful with movement. If you like the Aunty fit tight, go your size; if you want room to dance freely, size up.

I got this in navy for work events and casual Lela days around the house. It's lighter than I expected but still polished, and I can actually sit at my desk without wrestling with fabric. My daughter asked if she could get a matching one—now we have our mother-daughter set.

I love the easier movement for longer events, but I felt like the fabric was almost flimsy next to my heavier ceremonial pieces. It's still beautiful and the fit is right, but I wish there was a medium-weight option for that in-between feeling. Still wearing it though.
